What programme did you study at SHRI Academy?

Postgraduate Diploma in HR and Talent Management.

What motivated you to the study this programme at SHRI Academy?

It was fundamentally a needs-driven decision because I manage the Workplace Learning & Performance function in the organisation.

In today’s context, we are faced with the pressures of managing 2 important groups of workers – the “mature and experienced” on one end of the spectrum and the “young & mobile” on the other.

Our mature workers are getting older and, in the course of time, will inevitably exit the industry, bringing along with them their wealth of experience while the younger and newer generation of workers who join us come with a different set of expectations.

We recognise that succession and continuity is vital to our business. Managing talent effectively will enable us to develop the right people in the right numbers so that they can be deployed to the right places at the right time. Although this may sound clichéd, HR practitioners will tell you it is easier said than done. Talent Management cannot be done in isolation but as part of the larger scheme of Management and HR initiatives.

Tell us about your experiences of studying this programme at SHRI Academy.

The ‘Theory-Application’ balance was a well applied in this course.

We had the usual access to books and research papers which provided sound foundation to base our ideas. But I found significant value-add from the experience sharing by lecturers and the interactive class discussions.

The lecturers all have extensive field experience, so they were able to provide very valuable and constructive insights from a pragmatic stance.

For class discussions, we had students from different countries, working in various industries, and with a host of experiences. The exchange of ideas against this multi-national, multi-cultural backdrop was extremely enriching.

How do you think the knowledge and skills you acquired at SHRI Academy will benefit you in your career?

In Panasonic, we recognise that Human Resource Development is the primary responsibility of every supervisor / manager.

Coming from an engineering background with 20 years of manufacturing experience before crossing over to my current field of work, I can empathise with the challenges faced by the line managers.

The knowledge acquired will help me develop workable solutions where every manager can be brought on board to collectively work to address the situational needs of our organisation. Talent Management is not a one-off activity; it will be an ongoing process, with continuous improvements to be made as we move along.

Programme Title:
Postgraduate Diploma in HR and Organisational Development & Change – 2nd Intake

Name :
Mr Vincent Bong Yee Ngian
Company :
Temasek Polytechnic
Designation :
Deputy Director – HR & Staff Development
Others:
Mr Vincent Bong is also the Bronze Award Winner.

What programme did you study at SHRI Academy?
Postgraduate Diploma in HR and Organisational Development & Change.

What motivated you to the study this programme at SHRI Academy?
My career background was in Information Systems, having been Regional IT Director at Honeywell Asia Pacific and CIO at National Computer Systems, all the while being a people manager leading and motivating teams from the business angle.
Some 8 years ago, I joined a family-owned conglomerate business dealing in Shipping and Logistics, Supply Chain and other business areas where I was given the chance to wear multiple hats as Group Director in Human Resource and IT. This was where I was exposed to be on the other side of the fence, leading HR teams to partner with and support the business leaders.

As I crossed over into full-time HR when I joined Temasek Polytechnic as Deputy Director, Human Resource & Staff Development, I decided that I should have a formal certification in HR Management and Organisation Development to enhance my contribution to the organisation. Thus I embarked on an intensive programme at SHRI Academy.

Tell us about your experiences of studying this programme at SHRI Academy.
I did the Postgraduate Diploma in HR & Organisational Development & Change programme via Intenstive Weekend mode at SHRI Academy, meaning that weekday nights and weekends were spent in classrooms and at McDonalds over several months. We had some long weekends burnt as there were many public holidays in 2010.

However, time was well spent as the lecturers come from the industry and my classmates worked in all kinds of companies. This meant a wealthy pool of knowledge and best practices to learn from, and a very application-based type of learning. Just like in Temasek Polytechnic, our students are exposed to lecturers who have many years of experience in industry and therefore the learning becomes real and interesting with many case studies and examples.

How do you think the knowledge and skills you acquired at SHRI Academy will benefit you in your career?
There is discipline and methodology required in living out the HR profession, apart from the soft skills required in being a firm, assertive and people-oriented person. I learnt techniques and approaches that would be difficult to relate to out of a textbook by having interactive dialogue in class and doing the case studies dished out constantly by the lecturers. And best of all, to have the PGDipODC certification in your hat was a fun-filled achievement in itself.
